Cherry Blossom Season In Richmond!

The cherry blossoms are in full bloom here in Richmond! It is a wonderful time to take photos and enjoy nature with friends and family. When enjoying the blossoms, ensure to keep some safety tips in mind. Parking is limited near the blossoms, specifically ones in residential areas. Always park in safe and authorized areas, and be respectful of homes and walkways.

For information about where to find the blooms, visit: Cherry Trees in Richmond

On April 12th from 11am-4pm, the annual Cherry Blossom Festival will be taking place at Garry Point Park, Steveston. There will be local artisans, a Japanese tea ceremony, and food vendors to celebrate the rich Japanese culture in Steveston and the significance of cherry blossoms.

Health Care Worker Recruitment

One year after the B.C. government launched a targeted campaign to recruit U.S.-trained health-care workers, more than 400 professionals have signed on to work in B.C. communities. That's 89 doctors, 260 nurses, 45 nurse practitioners and 23 allied health professionals.

This is nearly triple the number since the previous update in September 2025.

By welcoming more U.S. doctors, nurse practitioners, nurses and allied health professionals, B.C. is building on the expertise of its health-care workforce to strengthen public health care, strengthen services for people and build healthy communities.

Master of Disaster Education Kits

The "Master of Disaster" BC education kits are developed to teach students about hazards in BC and how to prepare for natural disasters and emergencies. The educational resources align with the BC Curriculum for Physical and Health Education in grades 4 to 8, although the kit can be extended to other grade levels as-needed.

Students get hands-on learning experience in how to create an emergency plan, how to identify hazards, and understand how to get help if they need it. This is key information to increase safety in BC, and to teach about natural disasters using visual and memory aids to engage students and encourage knowledge acquisition.

For example, one of the games included in the kit is making a "disaster catcher" which is an interactive origami toy which helps solidify the concepts and engage young learners through play.

For more information, and to download or order the resource in both English and French, visit: Master of Disaster: Youth emergency preparedness - Province of British Columbia

Preparing for the 2026 Wildfire Season

The BC Wildfire Service (BCWS) has offered specialized training, increased the use of technology and invested in additional equipment to better protect people and communities during the 2026 wildfire season.

In anticipation of the 2026 wildfire season, BCWS:

  • invested $14 million to expand BCWS's on-the-ground firefighting equipment, such as trucks and camp infrastructure

  • acquired 10 additional Type 2 structure-protection units, which are trailers containing equipment such as pumps, hoses, sprinklers and water-delivery attachments for structure protection and defence, to protect communities

  • purchased mechanical assets, such as pumps, saws and safety equipment

These investments have been made to increase safety during the wildfire season across British Columbia.
