Happy May!

It was fun to attend the ribbon cutting for the newest addition to Steveston Village, the Steveston Thrift Shop Society. Thrifting is a fun and sustainable way to shop local, and I thank all of the hard-working volunteers and organizers that made the grand opening a success.

Next week is disaster preparedness week, and I will be sharing tips and preparedness information all week on my social media channels, and follow along to learn some tips about staying safe and preparing a survival grab and go kit.

In this newsletter:

  • Disaster Resilience and Innovation Funding and Disaster Preparedness Week

  • Child Care Month

  • Look West Major Project Update

  • Jewish Heritage Month

  • Asian Heritage Month

Strengthening Community Resilience in Climate Emergencies

People and communities in British Columbia are facing increasing risks from climate-driven hazards, making it critical to invest in preparedness and mitigation and through this funding, we are working with First Nations and local governments to strengthen infrastructure and reduce disaster risks, helping build safer, more resilient communities.

I am delighted to announce as Minister of Emergency Management and Climate Readiness that the Province is investing more than $18 million through the Disaster Resilience and Innovation Funding program for 10 projects throughout B.C., where funding supports First Nations and local governments to reduce risks from floods, drought, extreme temperatures, earthquakes and landslides

Next week is disaster preparedness week, and on social media and stay tuned to learn about grab and go bags, and what resources are out there to help you prepare. Social media linked below:

Child Care Month

High-quality, affordable, and reliable child care has been a game changer for families and B.C.’s economy. Thanks to B.C.’s child care investments, child care is now more affordable with more spaces and more educators than ever before.

We've grown a lot in the past eight years and we are not finished yet, says Lisa Beare, Minister of Education and Child Care. We're working hard to get child care in places that are already built for kids, such as prioritizing investments on school grounds. We've passed a new law to make it easier for school boards to operate child care and created a targeted fund to get those spaces up and running for the next school year.

Throughout B.C. communities, 12,000 provincially funded spaces are in development.

Look West: Major Project Update

Through investments in job training, and major projects, the Look West Strategy is securing long term-prosperity for everyone in our province.

This week we announced that we are adding 17 new major projects to our list of priorities, nearly doubling the initial list of proposed project-based investments in communities throughout the province. By making investments like this through our Look West strategy, we are getting major projects built, creating good-paying jobs, and investing in skills training so that more people in B.C. can access greater opportunities and higher paycheques.

These major projects rely on skilled tradespeople, which is why our government is investing an additional $241 million into trades training over three years. Our province will see up to 5,000 new trades training seats created in the next year alone. This means that people across the province will now have easier access to the training they need to build prosperity for themselves and their communities at the same time.

Jewish Heritage Month

B.C. is home to a thriving and growing Jewish population, supported by vibrant cultural institutions, community organizations and synagogues that enrich communities throughout the province.

“This Jewish Heritage Month, I encourage all people in British Columbia to learn about Jewish history and culture, to stand with their Jewish neighbours and to join us in building a province where every person can live free from hate, says Niki Sharma, Attorney General.

Asian Heritage Month

Representing many backgrounds, languages and traditions, Asian communities continue to enrich every part of life in B.C., from arts and science to sports, business and community leadership.

“Building a safer and more inclusive British Columbia takes sustained effort. It requires listening to lived experiences, confronting systemic barriers and supporting solutions led by the communities most affected, says Attorney General Niki Sharma. “This Asian Heritage Month, I encourage everyone to learn more about the diverse histories and perspectives that shape Asian communities, to reject racism in all its forms, and to stand together in fostering a province grounded in dignity, respect and belonging.”

Let us recognize and celebrate the rich cultures, histories and enduring contributions of diverse Asian communities throughout B.C.

Steveston Pride Walk 2026

It is nearing that time of year again where we are getting excited for the upcoming Richmond Pride Walk! Thank you all so much for coming last year, and it was wonderful to see all the love and support in our community for the LGBTQ+ community.

On May 17th is International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia, and together as a community we can oppose hate through demonstrating love and togetherness.

This year, we are holding the annual walk on Saturday July 25th at 11am on Steveston Boardwalk (Bayview & No.1 Rd).

If you are interested in volunteering for the event, please feel free to reach out to me at Kelly.Greene.MLA@leg.bc.ca and we can be in-touch to discuss opportunities.

Looking forward to seeing you all there!
